Sources: bank status from APRA's register of authorised deposit-taking institutions (updated 10 August 2026); credit licences from ASIC's credit licensee register (data.gov.au extract, read 30 September 2026); APRA reporting from APRA's list of registered financial corporations (updated 7 September 2026, read 10 October 2026), which names the entity that reports. A registered financial corporation provides statistical data to APRA under the Financial Sector (Collection of Data) Act 2001; it is not supervised by APRA the way a bank is. Business-only lenders often need no credit licence.
How a non-bank lender differs from a bank
A bank, building society or credit union is an authorised deposit-taking institution: APRA licenses it under the Banking Act 1959 and supervises it, and it funds its loans partly from customer deposits. A non-bank lender holds no banking licence and takes no deposits, so it funds its loans from investors, typically by selling bonds backed by its loans and through warehouse facilities from banks.
For a borrower, the consumer protections are the same: a non-bank that lends to individuals for personal or household purposes needs an Australian Credit Licence from ASIC, must follow the National Credit Code and the responsible lending rules, and must belong to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA). Check a lender's licence on ASIC's Professional Registers before you apply. Non-bank lenders: common questions
What is a non-bank lender?
A lender that is not an authorised deposit-taking institution (ADI): it does not hold a banking licence from APRA and does not take deposits. A non-bank that lends to consumers needs an Australian Credit Licence from ASIC and follows the same responsible lending laws as a bank, and many report their lending to APRA as registered financial corporations.
Can you list the non-bank lenders in Australia?
The non-bank lenders in this directory are, for home loans, Pepper Money, Liberty, La Trobe Financial, Resimac, Firstmac, Bluestone, RedZed and Athena; for personal and car loans, Plenti, Now Finance, Wisr, MoneyPlace, Latitude, SocietyOne, MoneyMe, Harmoney and OurMoneyMarket; and for business and equipment finance, Prospa, Banjo, Lumi, OnDeck, Capify, Moula, ScotPac, Earlypay, Octet, Shift and Angle Finance. APRA’s register of registered financial corporations, updated 7 September 2026, lists the non-bank lenders that report their lending to APRA.
Who are the largest non-bank lenders in Australia?
APRA’s monthly lending statistics cover only deposit-taking institutions, so there is no official table of non-bank lenders, and each lender reports its size on a different measure. On their own latest figures, La Trobe Financial has passed $25 billion of assets under management (August 2026), Pepper Money had $24.0 billion under management at 30 June 2026, $18.5 billion of it its own loans, Firstmac manages $22 billion of home loans (August 2026), Resimac had $16.5 billion under management at 30 June 2026, and Liberty Financial reported $15.2 billion of financial assets for the year to June 2026. Among consumer lenders, Latitude reported $7.3 billion of customer balances and Plenti a $3.3 billion loan portfolio at 30 June 2026.
Is it safe to borrow from a non-bank lender?
A loan from a licensed non-bank lender carries the same core protections as a bank loan: consumer lending is covered by the National Credit Code and ASIC’s responsible lending rules, and credit licensees must belong to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA), which handles disputes. Check the lender’s licence on ASIC’s Professional Registers before you apply; each lender page here shows the licence number we matched on the register.
Can I get a personal loan from a non-bank lender?
Yes. Non-bank lenders offering personal loans when we checked their sites on 30 September 2026 included Plenti (up to $75,000), Harmoney ($2,000 to $100,000), Wisr ($5,000 to $62,000), MoneyMe and SocietyOne ($5,000 to $70,000 each), NOW Finance ($5,000 to $100,000), OurMoneyMarket ($5,000 to $75,000), MoneyPlace (up to $80,000) and Latitude, and Pepper Money offers personal loans provided by NOW Finance. A personal loan to an individual is regulated under the National Credit Code whether the lender is a bank or not.
