Car loan pre-approval

A conditional approval to shop with, not a guarantee.

Car loan pre-approval is a conditional approval: a lender agrees in principle to lend you up to an amount, subject to checking the car, the invoice and your documents, so it is not a guarantee of a loan. loans.com.au, for example, says its pre-approval lasts 60 days and that final approval follows once your documents and the vehicle details are in (10 October 2026). What it gives you is a budget and a rate to hold the dealer’s finance offer against.

Rates are examples, not offers; your rate depends on the lender and your circumstances. 6.5% is about the bottom of the secured ranges the big banks published on 10 October 2026 and 8.5% about Westpac's 8.49% median (comparison 9.67%); your pre-approval sets your own rate. Car loan pre-approval at a glance
  • A conditional approval, not a guarantee: the lender still checks the car, the invoice and your documents
  • It expires: loans.com.au gives 60 days and says most run between 30 and 90 days
  • Each application is a credit enquiry; a quote from lenders such as Plenti or loans.com.au is not
  • Ask whether the rate is fixed until settlement or can be repriced
  • At the dealer, compare its offer with your pre-approval on the comparison rate

What pre-approval is, and what it is not

A pre-approval, which lenders also call a conditional approval, is a lender's assessment of your income, expenses and credit history before you have chosen a car. Westpac describes it as knowing, once you submit your application, whether you are conditionally approved and how much you could borrow; you may then need to send documents for verification.

It is not unconditional. Before the loan is final the lender checks the car (its age, value and whether it fits the lender's rules), receives the dealer's invoice or the private sale details, and confirms your documents. loans.com.au says plainly that pre-approval is not a guarantee. If your circumstances change, or the car does not fit, the loan can still be declined.

How long does pre-approval last?

It varies by lender. loans.com.au gives 60 days and says lenders' pre-approvals usually last between 30 and 90 days, as published on 10 October 2026. Apply close to when you plan to buy: if it lapses, you reapply, which usually means a fresh assessment and another credit enquiry on your file.

Does it affect your credit score?

The application does. Each pre-approval application involves a credit check, and loans.com.au warns that applying to several lenders in a short period may affect your score. A personalised rate quote is different: loans.com.au, Plenti and Great Southern Bank all publish quotes with no credit score impact. The sensible order is quotes first, then one application.

A car loan broker can compare lenders' policies against your situation before an application is lodged, so you apply to a lender likely to accept it.

What documents do you need?

Lenders publish their own lists. Westpac's, as an example (10 October 2026):

  • Identification, such as a driver licence or passport
  • Proof of income if your pay does not go into a Westpac account: two recent consecutive payslips less than 60 days old, a government statement for a pension or allowance from the last two months, or proof of rental income
  • If self-employed: at least 18 months in business, two months of business bank statements and last year's notice of assessment
  • Details of your income, expenses, debts and financial commitments, including buy now pay later

Westpac also recommends a before-tax income of at least $25,000. loans.com.au asks for digital ID verification, recent payslips and evidence of any other income, then the dealer's invoice once you have chosen the car. Lenders test whether the repayments fit after your living costs; the HEM explainer shows how they count them.

What rate does a pre-approval lock in?

Ask the lender directly whether the rate is fixed until settlement and for how long, or whether it can be repriced before the loan is drawn. A quote can be short-lived: loans.com.au says its personalised quote is valid for 48 hours. A pre-approval that can be repriced at settlement is weaker as a benchmark against the dealer.

Using a pre-approval at the dealer

Dealer finance is convenient, but it is one offer made after you have chosen the car. Mozo explains that the lender sets a buy rate and the dealer can mark it up, typically by 1 to 2.5 percentage points, keeping the difference (June 2026). On $40,000 over five years, 8.49% instead of 6.49% is about $820 a month instead of $782, or $2,281 more interest over the term.

  • Negotiate the car price first, as a separate conversation from the finance and any trade-in.
  • If the dealer offers to beat your pre-approval, ask for the comparison rate and the total cost over the term. Moneysmart notes the lender must give you the comparison rate, and that dealer-arranged loans can carry fees to several parties.
  • Price add-ons separately. Moneysmart warns that people selling cars can use high-pressure sales tactics, so take time to compare any insurance or warranty offered with the finance.

When pre-approval matters less

On a small loan the dollar cost of a rate gap is smaller, and if you already have a personalised rate from your own bank you may not need a separate pre-approval. It matters most when you are buying from a dealer and the finance is offered on the day.

How to get pre-approved

1
Set a budget
Use the repayment table above, and include insurance, registration and running costs.
2
Get quotes
Personalised quotes from lenders such as Plenti and loans.com.au do not affect your credit score.
3
Apply once
Apply with the lender you choose, with your ID, income and expense documents ready.
4
Choose the car
The lender checks the car and the invoice, then gives final approval and pays the seller.

WARNING: This comparison rate is true only for the examples given and may not include all fees and charges. Different terms, fees or other loan amounts might result in a different comparison rate. Comparison rates are calculated on a secured loan of $150,000 over 25 years for home loans and a loan of $30,000 over 5 years for car and personal loans, unless the lender states another basis. Business loans and equipment finance for a business purpose have no mandatory comparison rate.

Car loan pre-approval FAQs

Does pre-approval guarantee a car loan?
No. A pre-approval is a conditional approval based on what you told the lender at the time. loans.com.au, for example, says its pre-approval is not a guarantee and that unconditional approval follows only once your documents and the vehicle details are in and a final credit assessment is done (10 October 2026). A change in your income or debts, or a car that falls outside the lender’s rules, can still stop the loan.
How long does car loan pre-approval last?
It depends on the lender, so check the expiry date on yours. loans.com.au gives 60 days and says lenders’ pre-approvals usually run between 30 and 90 days (10 October 2026). If it lapses before you buy, you reapply, which usually means a fresh assessment and another credit enquiry.
Does car loan pre-approval affect my credit score?
The application does: each pre-approval application involves a credit check, and loans.com.au warns that applying with several lenders in a short period may affect your score. A personalised quote usually does not; loans.com.au, Plenti and Great Southern Bank publish quotes with no credit score impact (10 October 2026). Get quotes first, then apply once.
What documents do I need for car loan pre-approval?
Identification, proof of income and details of your expenses and debts. Westpac, for example, asks for two recent consecutive payslips less than 60 days old, or a government statement for a pension or allowance; self-employed applicants need 18 months in business, two months of business bank statements and last year’s notice of assessment (10 October 2026). The car’s details and the dealer’s invoice come later, before final approval.
How long does it take to get pre-approved for a car loan?
From about a minute to a few days. On their own pages on 10 October 2026, BankSA said you will know in about 60 seconds whether you are conditionally approved, CommBank said you get a response within 60 seconds of submitting, and loans.com.au said pre-approval often comes the same day, with final approval typically within two business days once documents and vehicle details are in.
Can I get pre-approved before I choose a car?
Yes. That is the point of it: you shop with a budget, and the lender checks the actual car before it finalises the loan. The amount you are finally approved for can depend on the car’s age and price; loans.com.au, for example, lends on vehicles up to 15 years old at the end of the term.
Can I use a pre-approval for a used car or a private sale?
Usually, if the car fits the lender’s rules. loans.com.au says its pre-approval can be used for a used car and that it pays the dealer or private seller directly after final approval. For a private sale, search the PPSR to confirm there is no finance owing on the car before you agree a price.
Is pre-approval worth it?
Usually, if you are buying from a dealer. Mozo explains that dealers can mark up the lender’s rate, typically by 1 to 2.5 percentage points (June 2026). On $40,000 over five years, 8.49% instead of 6.49% costs about $2,281 more in interest. A pre-approval gives you a rate to compare the dealer’s offer against on the comparison rate.
